Tipping
Our crew would be grateful for a tip at the end of the trip. Talking about tipping is always a challenge. Tipping is different in each culture. Therefore, the Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project (KPAP) has set guidelines for tipping amounts. They are the same no matter which route or outfitter you end up choosing. According to KPAP you should tip:
- Lead guide: $20/day
- Assistant guide: $15/day
- Porters: $8/day (for each porter)
- Cook: $15/day
These amounts are what each crew member is expected to receive. You can use the following reference table in which crew size, duration and amount of climbers has been considered:

Yes indeed, this is big money. But it is very important to the crew members!
At Genius Kilimanjaro, we pay our porters better, however we would really appreciate if you consider tipping in the range of the guidelines above.
It is most practical to collect the cash before departure. ATM’s normally allow only Tsh 400,000 per withdrawal, so this process can be a small challenge…
Tipping procedure
We will give you a list of all the crew members on the final night on the mountain and enough envelopes. You can then fill the envelopes for each crew member, considering also special efforts made for you (e.g. your summit porters). Please don’t give all the tip money to your guide for him to distribute.
