This 7-day itinerary includes a crucial acclimatization day at Mawenzi Tarn to enhance your chances of reaching the summit successfully. You’ll camp in scenic and remote areas and ascend to the Roof of Africa – Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters) – under the expert care of Genius Kilimanjaro Climb.

Itinerary

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), you will be warmly welcomed by our team and transferred to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha. After check-in, you’ll meet your mountain guide for a detailed briefing and final gear check.
🛏️ Overnight at hotel in Moshi/Arusha (bed & breakfast).

After breakfast at your hotel, you’ll be driven to Lemosho Gate (~2 hours). Although Londorossi Gate used to be a stop for registration, today you’ll proceed directly to Lemosho where your climb formally begins. After registration and lunch at the gate, you’ll start trekking through the lush rainforest. Keep an eye out for black-and-white colobus monkeys along the way. By early evening, you’ll arrive at Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree) Camp. Warm water will be provided for washing before dinner and a briefing for the next day.

After breakfast, you'll continue the hike as the rainforest gives way to heather and volcanic rock. Today’s trek takes about 5–6 hours, leading you up to the Shira Plateau. You’ll cross Shira Ridge before gently descending into Shira Camp 1 with beautiful views of Kibo Peak ahead. Enjoy lunch, rest, and later dinner at camp followed by a briefing for day 3.

Today’s hike is relatively short (3–4 hours), providing an excellent opportunity for acclimatization. You’ll cross the Shira Plateau—one of the highest plateaus on earth. Optional detour to Shira Cathedral (3895m) for those feeling strong. Once at Shira Camp 2, you’ll have lunch, rest, and enjoy a fantastic view of Kibo Peak before settling in for dinner and the day’s briefing.

A key acclimatization day: you'll hike up to 4600m at Lava Tower before descending to sleep at 3950m at Barranco Camp. The climb high, sleep low approach helps your body adapt to altitude. Expect a 7-hour trek through alpine desert terrain. After lunch at Lava Tower, descend into the beautiful Barranco Valley below the imposing Barranco Wall. Dinner and overnight at Barranco Camp.

After breakfast, it’s time to conquer the Great Barranco Wall—a thrilling scramble with rewarding views at the top. The trail then undulates through valleys before arriving at Karanga Camp. This short day (3–4 hours) is for acclimatization. After lunch and rest, enjoy a spectacular view of the summit. Dinner and overnight at Karanga.

Today’s hike takes 3–4 hours as you climb steadily towards Barafu Camp, the final base camp before your summit attempt. Located on an exposed ridge, the area can be windy and cold. After familiarizing yourself with the camp, you’ll rest, hydrate, and have an early dinner. A detailed briefing will be given by your guides as you prepare for summit night.

Summit day! You’ll be woken at midnight with tea and snacks before beginning the final ascent under the stars. You’ll climb 5–7 hours to Stella Point (5730m), then another hour to Uhuru Peak (5895m), where you’ll watch the sun rise over Africa. After photos and celebrations, descend back to Barafu Camp for a short rest before continuing to Mweka Camp for the night. This long, challenging day ends with a warm meal and deep sleep.

Your final descent takes 2–3 hours through rainforest to Mweka Gate. After signing out of the park, you’ll receive your summit certificate and enjoy a farewell lunch. Then, you’ll be transferred back to Arusha for a well-deserved shower and overnight at your hotel.

Departure from Arusha
After breakfast, depending on your flight time, you may have time for a short Arusha city tour or souvenir shopping. Later, you'll be transferred to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) for your onward flight home. End of Genius Kilimanjaro Climbing services.
