Overview

The Shira Route is a beautiful and less crowded trail that approaches Kilimanjaro from the west. Originally a route for those wanting to start high, it's ideal for trekkers who want a scenic, slow-acclimatizing adventure. Over seven unforgettable days, you'll hike through rainforests, volcanic plateaus, and alpine deserts, cross the iconic Lava Tower, and ascend Africa’s highest peak – Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters. This route merges with the Lemosho and Machame trails on the way, offering varied scenery and high chances of summit success.

Itinerary

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), you will be warmly welcomed by our team and transferred to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha. After check-in, you’ll meet your mountain guide for a detailed briefing and final gear check.
🛏️ Overnight at hotel in Moshi/Arusha (bed & breakfast).

Your journey begins with a drive to Londorossi Gate for park registration, followed by a bumpy but scenic drive to Morum Barrier Gate (3,414 m). From here, you begin your short hike through heathland and moorland. The path is calm, giving your body a gentle start to the climb. You’ll reach Shira 1 Camp in the early afternoon for a warm meal and rest.
