Overview

The 6-day Marangu Route is considered the most accessible and most comfortable route to reach the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. The route is well-developed and the climb is moderate and gradual. However, the approach to the forum is the exception because it is more demanding. The accommodation on this route is in simple mountain huts, which might be an advantage compared to the routes offering camping options.

 

Arrival at the airport

Upon your arrival at Kilimanjaro or Arusha Airport, you will be met by the Genius Kilimanjaro climbing team. You will be transferred to your in Arusha where you will be accommodated overnight. Depending on your arrival time, the remainder of this day will be spent resting or exploring Arusha Town. In the evening you will be met by our team of guides for a briefing session about the hike. Our team will also take time to inspect your hiking gear to ensure that everyone is ready with the proper gear for the 6-Day Marangu Route hike.

Mount Kilimanjaro is a dormant volcano located in Kilimanjaro Region of Tanzania. It has three volcanic cones: Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira. It is the highest mountain in Africa and highest single free-standing mountain above sea level in the world: 5,895 m above sea level and about 4,900 m above its plateau base.

Schedule Details

Day 1: Arusha – Marangu Gate (1,816 masl) – Mandara hut (2,740 masl)

Your first day of the hike to Kilimanjaro National Park through the Marangu route will begin early in the morning 7:30 am after breakfast. The genius Kilimanjaro climbing team will drive you for 2 – 3 hours to Marangu Gate. Your hiking adventure will commence soon after completing all the necessary registrations at the gate. After about 3 hours of hiking, you will have your packed lunch at Kisambioni. After lunch, you will proceed with your hike for a further 2 hours passing through the dense rain forest. On arrival at Mandara Hut, you will rest before visiting Maundi Crater. The view of Kibo Peak is amazing from here. You will then return to Mandara Hut where you will be accommodated for the night. You will be served dinner prepared by Genius Kilimanjaro climbing chief chef after which you will retire for the night.

Day 2: Mandara Hut (2,700 masl) – Horombo Hut (3,700 masl)

On day 2 you will be served breakfast by Genius Kilimanjaro climbing chief Chef. After breakfast, you will depart from Mandara Hut heading out of the rain forest into heather moorland. Our destination is Horombo Hut. The hike to Horombo Hut will take about 5 to 6 hours including time for lunch. During your ascent, you will spot spectacular plants such as giant lobelia and the giant groundsel. At Horombo Hut you will relax and later in the evening, you will be served dinner and then retire for the night.

Day 3: Horombo Hut (3,700 masl) – Zebra Rocks (4,020 masl) – Horombo Hut (3,700 masl)

Day 3 is an extra day and night at Horombo is for additional acclimatization. After breakfast, you will hike towards the Mawenzi hut passing the Zebra Rocks on the way. The hike will take about 3 hours up and 11/2 hours down. This hike will further assist with the process of acclimatization. This acclimatization day doubles the chances of a successful summit. You will then return to Horombo Hut for your dinner and overnight stay.

Day 4: Horombo Hut (3,700 masl) – Kibo Hut (4,700 masl)

On day 4 you will proceed with hiking for 6 hours after breakfast. Our destination today is Kibo Hut. We will traverse the “saddle,” the area located between the peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo in an alpine desert. After lunch and relaxation, dinner will be served early in the evening to allow adequate rest before attempting the summit the same night. Genius Kilimanjaro climbing guides will brief you in detail on how to prepare for the summit night. You will spend the night at the Kibo Hut.

Day 5: Kibo Hut (4700 masl) – Uhuru Peak (5,895 masl) – Horombo Hut (3,700 masl)

At around midnight Genius Kilimanjaro climbing will wake you up with a warm cup of tea and biscuits to get you ready for your final ascent. Your headlamps, and the moonlight at times, will be your only source of light as you make your way up to Stella Point at 5,730 meters above sea level, reaching the crater rim in about 5 to 7 hours. Another 1 to 2 hours will take you to Uhuru Peak, where you can enjoy the sunrise over the roof of Africa. After capturing this incredible view and achievement on film you will start the descent along the same route back to Horombo Hut where the Genius Kilimanjaro climbing team will be awaiting you with some snacks and refreshments. Later you will be served dinner and retire for the night.

Day 6: Horombo Hut (3,700 masl) – Marangu Gate (1,816masl) – Arusha.

On day 6 our team will serve you breakfast after which you will have a traditional farewell ceremony hosted by the Genius Kilimanjaro climbing team. You will thereafter start your descent from Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate taking about 6 to 7 hours. On arrival at Marangu gate, you will be signed out and awarded a golden certificate for summiting Uhuru Peak. You will then proceed to your hotel in Arusha for an overnight stay before departing.
