7 Day Rongai Route Kilimanjaro Climbing, the route ascends Kilimanjaro from the northeastern side along the border between Tanzania and Kenya. This route maintains an unspoiled wilderness feel, offering a unique Kilimanjaro perspective from its northern approach.

 

Arrival at the airport and pick up

Upon your arrival at Kilimanjaro or Arusha Airport, you will be met by Genius Kilimanjaro Climb. You will be transferred to your hotel in Arusha where you will be accommodated overnight.

  2. In the evening, our team of guides will meet you for a briefing on the 7 Day Rongai Route Climbing.
  3. They will also inspect your gear to ensure everyone has the proper equipment for the hike.

Mount Kilimanjaro is a dormant volcano located in Kilimanjaro Region of Tanzania. It has three volcanic cones: Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira. It is the highest mountain in Africa and highest single free-standing mountain above sea level in the world: 5,895 m above sea level and about 4,900 m above its plateau base.

Schedule Details

Day 1: Rongai Start Point (1,996 masl) – Simba Camp (2,626 masl)

Genius Kilimanjaro Climb will pick you up from your hotel in Arusha and drive you for 2 hours to the Marangu gate for registration. After registration, you will head northeast for 2 ½ hours to the Rongai start point. The hike to the first camp will take about 4 hours to the destination. You will pass a rainforest zone where you may spot some colobus monkeys. Our destination is Simba Camp. Our team will have arrived at the Camp ahead of you to pitch up your tents and set camp ready to receive you. You will be provided with warm water to freshen up and be served with lunch. You will have the rest of the day to rest. In the evening dinner will be served to allow you time to retire for the night.

Day 2: Simba Camp (2626masl)- 2nd Cave (3450masl) -Kikelewa Camp (3,670masl)

On day 2, you will hike from Simba camp to the 2nd Cave  3450 meters above sea level for lunch. After lunch, you will proceed with trekking until Kikelewa Camp. At Kikelewa Camp the view opens up to allow you to see the surrounding areas. You will have an overnight stay at Kikelewa Camp where you will be served dinner. Genius Kilimanjaro Climb will brief you about the following day’s hike before retiring to your tents for the night.

Day 3: Kikelewa Camp (3,670 masl) – Mawenzi Tarn (4,303 masl)

Today’s destination will be a short but steep climb. After breakfast, you will leave Kilelewa Camp and head towards Mawenzi Tarn. The hike takes about 4 to 5 hours to complete. At the Tarn, you will eat your lunch and spend the afternoon acclimatizing and exploring the area. In the evening Genius Kilimanjaro Climb will serve you dinner after which you will stay overnight at the Tarn.

Day 4: Mawenzi Tarn (4,303 masl) – Mawenzi Ridge (4389 masl) – Mawenzi Tarn (4,303 masl)

Day 4 is meant for acclimatization. After breakfast, you will hike steadily for 3-4 hours covering about 4 kilometers up to Mawenzi Ridge. Here you will enjoy fantastic views on both sides. The landscape is rugged and rocky.  After spending a few moments exploring Mawenzi Ridge, you will head back to Mawenzi Tarn for an overnight stay. The acclimatization experience gained is necessary for a successful summit. Genius Kilimanjaro Climb will serve you dinner after which you will return to your tents to sleep.

Day 5: Mawenzi Tarn (4,303 masl) – Kibo Hut (4,700 masl)

After breakfast, we head west and continue ascending crossing the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo. The hike will take 4 to 5 hours to reach Kibo Hut, our destination for the day. At Kibo Hut you will spend the remainder of the day resting in preparation for the final ascent, which begins around midnight.

Day 6: Kibo Hut (4,700 masl) to Uhuru Peak (5,895 masl) and then Horombo Hut (3,700 masl)

On day 6 at around midnight, you will be woken up by Genius Kilimanjaro Climb with a warm cup of tea and biscuits to get you ready for your final ascent. Your headlamps, and on a lucky day moonlight, will be your only source of light as you make your way up to Stella Point at an elevation of 5,730 meters above sea level, reaching the crater rim in about 5 to 7 hours. Another 1 to 2 hours will take you to Uhuru Peak where you can enjoy the sunrise. After capturing this incredible view and achievement on film you will start to descend along the same route back to Horombo Hut. Genius Kilimanjaro  Climb will be at hand to receive you on arrival at Horombo Hut with some snacks and refreshments. In the evening you will be served dinner after which you will spend the night at Horombo Hut.

Day 7: Horombo Hut (3,700 masl) to Marangu Gate (1,816 masl)

On day 7, there will be a farewell ceremony hosted by Genius Kilimanjaro Climb after breakfast. You will then begin your descent from Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate, a trek of 6 to 7 hours. At Marangu gate, you will be signed out and awarded a golden certificate for summiting Uhuru Peak. You will then be driven back to Arusha for your overnight stay.
